Boulogne Calais Port

Formalities and checks

The formalities and checks at Boulogne Calais Port differ depending on the terminal in question.

Ferry terminal
  • Checking and inspection of individuals and their vehicles

The authorities check drivers, as passengers subject to identity checks on leaving the Schengen Area and entering British territory. They may undergo a customs check. Presentation to the inspection authorities of their personal travel documents (identity papers, passports) is systematic and compulsory (Police Aux Frontières, United Kingdom Border Force, French customs authorities).

Passengers' identities are collected by the shipping companies. This collection allows individuals to become passengers having a travel pass (ticket). The collection also makes it possible to establish the onboard manifest. This data collection takes place in the registration stalls. The Boulogne Calais Port personnel and the state's civil servants may, depending on their competencies and jurisdictions, check and inspect vehicles for security purposes (ISPS code) or as part of the combat against illegal immigration between France and the United Kingdom.

  • Checking and inspection of cargo

Cargo is subject to checks for maritime security and as part of customs checks for duties and taxes.

The shipping companies ask to check cargo documents (CMR) in order to ensure compliance with the IMDG code and maritime security. The shipping companies are responsible for interfacing with the harbour master's office in charge of application of the code in the port. The shipping companies' employees are trained in translating the ADR regulations into IMDG. These documents are checked in the registration stall. In the event of missing documents or for the collection of additional information, an investigation will be made in the shipping company's freight office.

Live animals are covered by a special procedure with a view to their acceptance in the United Kingdom. Passengers are asked to contact their shipping company for more details on the procedure.

The customs authorities are required to check cargo documents as part of the combat against illegal trafficking. The document checks may lead to an inspection of the vehicle, with the sequels and consequences provided for by the Customs Code.

The different controls and inspections:

PAF: the French Border Police controls travel documents (identity documents) under the Schengen exit.

Port Boulogne Calais: instrumented inspection under the ISPS code (port security) and the Treaty of Le Touquet (search for unauthorized persons to leave the Schengen area or to enter the United Kingdom). 100% of vehicles are inspected using non-intrusive technologies (CO², PMMW). A negative control allows the customer to go to the registration. A positive control involves a PAF intervention to rid the vehicle of intruders.

Check-in: drivers record their crossing on the shipping company of their choice and are assigned a boarding line.

UKBF: United Kingdom Border Force provides documentary control of passenger travel documents for British entry.

Freight offices of the shipping companies: technical-commercial assistance service for the specific questions relating to the commercial relations, the goods documents, the hazardous goods or the unaccompanied.

UKBF: inspection of road assemblies for the fight against illegal immigration in the UK.

Important:
Before your passage through the port, carriers are advised to take note of the recommendations issued by the UKBF as part of the fight against illegal immigration. Follow the link:

    Intermodal terminal
    • Rail hub

The rail motorway terminal is directly accessible from the port ring road and via municipal roads. It is accessible to customers' vehicles after passing through access control.

The VIIA terminal is the place where trailers embarking on the rail motorway trains are unhitched. It is also the place where trailers disembarking from the rail motorway are retrieved.

For reasons of security of the property entrusted to Viia for guarding, vehicles entering and leaving the Terminal must be known to the operator. When registering, customers provide, on the Viia portal, the registration plates of the trailers and, if possible, those of the tractors and the driver's name.

The consistency of the information registered in the Viia customer system protects customers against improper use of their customer accounts, and ensures that only designated persons and vehicles are able to bring a trailer out of the terminal.

    • Unaccompanied trailers park

The area for unhitching and retrieving unaccompanied trailers transshipping to and/or from ships is located in Intermodal Terminal and can be accessed directly from the ring road or via municipal roads.
