To maintain the smooth flow of goods, French customs, in collaboration with the port of Calais and shipping companies, has designed an innovative technological solution: the smart border.

The smart border is based on three fundamental principles:

• Anticipating customs formalities before arriving at the port by giving road hauliers the barcode of the customs declaration.
• Identification of the HGV and barcode of the customs declaration of the goods it carries.
• Automation of notifications of passage to customs brokers (RDEs) to avoid heavy goods vehicle delays.
