This morning, Boulogne Calais Port inaugurated its rail terminal and thus became the first European port to have such a facility allowing the transport of unaccompanied semi-trailers.

A large public came to attend the train loading/unloading demonstration organised on the new terminal. The new VIIA Britanica line operated by VIIA, a subsidiary of SNCF Logistics, the longest in Europe with its 1,400 km, will enter service on 12 January 2016 and connect the Port of Calais with Boulou, on the French-Spanish border. It will thus make it possible to connect Spain directly with the United Kingdom.

When in full swing, 40,000 semi-trailers per year will be transported in this way on trains with 20 wagons (680 metres, 2,000 tonnes) capable of loading 40 semi-trailers.

On the occasion of this event, ten European transport firms officially committed themselves to VIIA.
